Red Dog may be right.... there comes a point where you reach diminishing returns... I would have to say that you have reached that time-wise.... if the time it takes to fix exceeds the time it takes to format and re-install, then you are there.

Re: Computer won't connect to the modem
Well, I finally took the ailing computer to a computer tech that's a friend of mine and he determined the problem was a bad network card. He replaced the NetGear card I had in there with a (piece of junk) Realtek card. It worked, well, kinda worked. It ran fine for a couple of days and then started doing the same thing again. However, I found that if I unplugged the Ethernet cable from the modem then plugged it back in, it worked. However, its not the greatest connection in the world.
The way I see it I have a few choices with this computer:
Reinstall Windows,
Replace the motherboard,
Throw it off a cliff.
Since there are no cliffs in Florida, well . . .

I would definitely reformat before replacing the motherboard
Handle every stressful situation like a Dog....if you can't eat, hump it, or play with it, pee on it and walk away
